Golf 8R je pokračovatelem jednoho z nejoblíbenějších a nejprodávanějších modelů na světě. Přídomek R pak napovídá, že se jedná o nejsportovnější verzi v nabídce automobilky Volkswagen a jeho výkon je tradičně přenášen na všechna čtyři kola. Osmá generace využívá modernizovanou platformu MQB EVO, kterou sdílí s dalšími modely jako Škoda Octavia 3, Cupra Leon, Audi A3/S3 a dalšími. Velká část dílů je tak použitelná i pro tyto a další modely. Pod kapotou Golfu R pracuje dvoulitrový čtyřválec TSI EA888 4. generace přeplňovaný turbodmychadlem Continental s výkonem mezi 320 a 333 koňmi.
